Well, robot toys are here to stay and each year they'll get better and better. The testing for this year's choices was loads of fun. Our adult testers had as much fun as the kids! So here's where we ended up...
The Top Robot Toys This Year
We went out to find the best robotics we could find. Okay - not the industrial type, but the ones that you can be comfortable giving an 8-12 year old. There is plenty to choose from. The Robosapien Version 2 Remote-Controlled Robot is our top pick. with 100 pre-set commands and a remote control, this is by far the most advanced model that is in an accessible price range. The Original version is cool too. But lacks the advanced modes and sheer number of programmable functions. The Robosapiens stand at 14" tall and nice heavy duty construction - though you still need to be somewhat careful. This toy set the benchmark for robotic coolness!
There are a host of other products that we looked at including the Robopet, Roboraptor, Roboreptile and even the Wow Wee Chimpanzee Alive! This one is interesting to say the least!
How and Where to Shop
We did some searches online for you to make it easy to shop. In fact, part of our selection process for robot toys to review is to take into consideration the availability and price points of teh different robot toys. FOr the most part, you can get into a cool robot for around $50-$60. All of the large toy retailers will carry them.
When you're ready to buy, make your decision based on the following factors:
- How old is your child? Most robot toys are suitable for 8-12 year olds, but your 8 year old should be advanced enough to play gently.
- Attention to detail - For some toys like the Robosapien V2, it does require some learning curve and patience to get the most out of the robot. Definitely take this into consideration - you know your kid best!
- Cost - As mentioned, you can get into a Robopet or Roboraptor for around fifty bucks, some of the more advanced toys can go upwards of $200.
- To Build or Not to Build? That is the question! The LEGO Mindstorms NXT is part building set and part robot toy. Very cool - but definitely a bit different than a robotoy by itself.

Special Note! : The Robosapien Version 2 Remote-Controlled Robot is a very cool toy, but the action guide that comes with it is somewhat lacking. The The Official Robosapien Hacker's Guide is a book that will get you deep into the "brain" of the toy and really bring out its potential. Highly recommended!
